The Human Microbiome- A talk by Dr. Owen White - November 6th THIS FRIDAY!! There are 100 trillion microbes living on and in you right now. Do you know anything about them and how they influence your daily life and health? We are excited to welcome Dr. Owen White, the director of the Bioinformatics department at Baltimore's own Institute of Genome Sciences (IGS) at University of Maryland School of Medicine. His talk will be about the human microbiome, how we gather data and analyze the vast amounts of different bacterial communities and the immense impact this unseen world has on our own lives.

Maryland STEM Festival-Meet your local citizen science lab! 2 events!
The FIRST ever Maryland STEM Festival is happening November 6th-15th. Check out all of the various events at this momentous festival! We will have hands-on activities (ever pipette before, try some synbio, or paint" with bacteria?), classes and event information, and some interesting discussions about what we have been up to in the lab recently (paramecium video games and 3D printing with silk to name a couple).

KID LAB at BUGSS! Build a Winogradsky column- November 14th
Kids 9 years and up and their parents or guardians can enjoy a hands-on workshop to make something (and bring it home) and learn some awesome science. Tools and supplies provided by BUGSS.
First workshop: Construct a tool used by scientists to investigate biofilms in a contained ecosystem called a Winogradsky column. Take this column home and place in a sunny warm spot and observe the colorful developments over time. Keep track and record findings using social media updates to BUGSS.
